After graduation, Mr. Babbitt worked for several years with the Sanitary District of Chicago and the Ohio State Department of Health. He served with the American Expeditionary Forces from 1917 to 1919. In 1913 he joined the staff of the University of Illinois where he taught for forty years; in 1954 he became Professor Emeritus.
Since retirement, he has been an adviser to colleges and universities in Korea, India, and Brazil and has served as visiting professor at various universities both in the United States and abroad. He has played a major role in the engineering societies and associations and has been president or director of four of them.
He has made lasting contributions in four widely used books which have been used both as texts and as references for practicing engineers, including Sewerage and Sewerage Treatment, first published in 1922 and issued in eight editions; Water Supply Engineering, first issued in 1929, and in its sixth edition which was published in 1962. Through his own research and his stimulating teaching he developed the creative talents of his students and staff.
