Health Care Engineering Systems Center receives donated RoSS surgical robot

The Health Care Engineering Systems Center (HCESC) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign recently received a donation from Simulated Surgical Systems LLC, a California-based robotic surgery simulation company. As part of the donation, Simulated Surgical Systems gave the HCESC a refurbished, first-generation RoSS™ Robotic Surgery Simulator.

The RoSS™ system is a portable, stand-alone robotic surgery simulator that teaches surgeons how to use the daVinci© surgical robot. According to Simulated Surgical Systems’ website, RoSS™ has become “an important training tool for the daVinci© surgical robot, used in North America, Europe,  and Asia.” The curriculum includes 16 varying difficulty levels and full-length surgical procedures in 3D. The HoST (Hands-on Surgical Training) modules use real surgical cases to train the surgeons.

“The purpose of this donation is to foster collaborative research between the University of Illinois and Simulated Surgical Systems with the goal of enhancing the existing robotic surgery infrastructure by developing new critical applications,” HCESC Director Thenkurussi Kesavadas said.

Kesavadas, along with Director of the Center for Robotic Surgery Khurshid Guru, founded Simulated Surgical Systems in 2009 in an effort to commercialize RoSS™. The company was sold and relocated to California in 2014.

“Robotic surgery has only been around since the early 2000s,” Kesavadas said. “Even though it is not ideal for all surgeries, it has replaced traditional open surgery in many fields, including urology and gynecology. Whether or not fully-automated surgery ever becomes a reality, robots will surely play an ever larger role in medical practice.”
