Student Research

As part of a premier public research institution, the College of Engineering can offer undergraduates something more than a classroom experience--the chance to work in a laboratory alongside researchers who are leaders in their fields. Undergraduate students can join research teams addressing some of the most interesting and important problems of our time.

Most students contact individual faculty members directly, arranging to work on topics that interest them, while other students participate in targeted programs such as:

The College of Engineering Intel Scholars Undergraduate Research Program (ISUR)

Created to provide research opportunities to underrepresented students in engineering (women and/or African American, Latino/a, and Native American), ISUR has evolved from an undergraduate research opportunity to a year-long experience as a research learning community.

Aerospace Science and Engineering Research Opportunities

The Department of Aerospace Engineering offers a 10-week research program that focuses on multidisciplinary research in aerospace science and engineering (ASE). Highly-motivated juniors (rising seniors) with backgrounds in engineering, computer science and physics are invited to apply.

Promoting Undergraduate Research in ECE (PURE)

Developed by engineering senior Kuang Xu, this program's aim is to create research opportunities for undergraduates, in particular freshmen and sophomores.

Research Park Internships

The Research Park on the south end of campus provides an environment where technology-based businesses can work with the research faculty and students at Illinois for collaborative research. The Research Park is now home to 60 companies and growing. At any given time, more than 200 University of Illinois student interns are working in these companies gaining valuable work experience while making real contributions to internal corporate R&D and product development programs.

Undergraduate Research Symposium

The Undergraduate Research Symposium gives hundreds of undergraduates the opportunity to demonstrate the fruits of the research and creative activities they have accomplished with the mentoring of Illinois faculty.
