Transfer Students

The College of Engineering admits qualified transfer students from other colleges on campus as well as community and four-year colleges. Advisors work closely with many Illinois schools to implement coordinated engineering programs.

Admission Requirements

To qualify for transfer admission to the College of Engineering, a student must complete the following courses (the appropriate University of Illinois course is given in parenthesis along with the number of hours associated with the requirement for most programs):

  • English Composition (RHET 105, 4 hours).
  • Calculus 1 and Calculus 2 (MATH 220 or 221 and MATH 231, 8 hours).
  • General Chemistry, normally a two-course sequence with both courses required (CHEM 102/103 and CHEM 104/105, 8 hours). Note that some programs in the College of Engineering require only one semester of Chemistry (i.e., Comp E, EE, CS, and Nuc E).
  • Engineering Physics, the first course in calculus-based mechanics (PHYS 211, 4 hours).

Applicants must demonstrate mastery of subject matter by averaging at least a 3.0/4.0 grade point average in the required technical subjects (items 2-4 above) as well as a 3.0/4.0 cumulative GPA for all courses completed. In addition to the required courses, students may enhance their chances of gaining admission by completing additional courses that transfer to their desired program of study. For complete listings of the graduation requirements, see Undergraduate Programs of Study & Special Programs.

Foreign language is also required for admission. A student must complete the second level of a single foreign language for admission and must complete the third level of a single foreign language for graduation. A level is of one year of high school language or one semester of college language. For example, a student who has completed Spanish 1, 2 and 3 meets both the admission and graduation requirements, however, a student who has completed only Spanish 1 and 2 meets only the admission requirement and must complete a third-level course (e.g., Spanish 3 or Chinese 3) to graduate.
