Stanley  I.  Weiss
To Sanley I. Weiss, reserch and manufacturing director, industrial executive, and lecturer, for his leadership in systems engineering applications in the aerospace industry, especially inthe private sector and the federal government.

After working with Goodyear Aircraft Corporation in Akron, Ohio, and Kawneer Company in Niles, Michigan, Stanley I. Weiss joined Lockheed Missiles and Space Co. in 1957 as manufacturing manager of the Discoverer satellite. By 1987, he had become Lockheed’s vice president of engineering and general manager of research and development staff, positions he held until his retirement in 1990. His tenure at Lockheed was interrupted from 1978 to 1983, when he directed research programs for the U.S. Department of Defense and NASA. At Lockheed, his positions included being a program manager for NASA and U.S. Air Force satellite and launch vehicle projects; vice president for advanced space programs, particularly space, command control and communication systems for the space telescope, Seasat, and navy command control support programs; and corporate vice president for engineering, where he oversaw engineering practice and product safety for products in aerospace, electronics, data processing, and marine systems. Throughout his career, he emphasized a system engineering approach, which has led to efficient practices in aerospace manufacturing.

During his career and into retirement, Weiss has been associated with various university activities in teaching, research, and industrial affiliation. He is a member of the executive committee of UIUC’s College of Engineering Advisory Board and is chairman of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics’ Advisory Board.
