Professor Mike Philpott

Mike Philpott is Emeritus Associate Professor of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. With over 40 years of design and manufacture experience in industry and academia, and over 50 related publications, Dr. Philpott is one of the world's foremost authorities in the areas of Design-to-Cost, Design-for-Manufacture, and Design-for-Assembly. He is founder of aPriori Technologies, a Boston-based company that developed the first fully CAD-integrated manufacturing cost analysis software used extensively today by leading product manufacturing companies such as Ford, John Deere, CAT, Bissell, AGCO, NCR, and Polaris.

Dr. Philpott has a Ph.D. and MS in Manufacturing from Cranfield Institute of Technology (U.K.). He directed the research on process cost modeling and the development of the aPriori software at the University of Illinois since 1993. He has developed two new, and now 'required', classes for the ME curriculum in "Computer Aided Design" and "Design for Manufacture". He also manages the senior design program and a number of extra-curricular design/build/compete undergraduate teams: Formula SAE, Baja SAE, Formula Electric, Eco-marathon Prototype and Urban Concept vehicle. Prior to Illinois, Dr. Philpott spent twelve years as a design and manufacturing engineer in the British automotive and machine tool industry working at Land Rover, Jaguar, Molins, and British Leyland.
