If you anticipate using financial aid (including grants, scholarships, loans, etc.) to pay for study abroad, you must inform the Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA).
The amount of financial aid that is applicable to study abroad will depend on your financial aid package. Since there are many variables that determine how your financial aid package applies to study abroad, it is best that you consult with a financial aid adviser in OSFA to discuss your individual financial aid package.
If you have questions about your financial aid package for your term abroad, please contact OSFA. While they have access to the study abroad budgets, it would be helpful to have a copy of your budget when you go in. If the official program budget for your term abroad is not yet available, please use the estimated budget. To find a copy of your program's estimated budget:
- Go to https://www.studyabroad.illinois.edu;
- Click on "Search Programs" from the left-hand side of the screen;
- Type in your program's name in the "Program Name" text box;
- On the program page, click on the link corresponding to your term abroad within the "Budget Sheets" section of the grey box located at the top of the program page.
Your Illinois financial aid and/or Illinois study abroad scholarships will be applied to your Illinois Student Account shortly before the beginning of the semester at the University of Illinois and around the same time that you will be billed for the IPENG Program Fee and Illinois Tuition and Fees. Roughly, this corresponds to:
- Summer Faculty-led Programs - May
- Summer Programs (others) - June
- Fall and first half of Academic Year - August
- Winter Break - December
- Spring and second half of Academic Year - January
If you still owe money after your financial aid and scholarships are applied to your Student Account, your Student Account will reflect the balance owed. If you have aid or scholarship funds left over, the amount will be deposited into your Direct Deposit account to help you pay for other study abroad-related expenses. If you have not yet set up an account for Direct Deposit, please do so in the "Account Billing Information" section on UI-Integrate. Please note that, occasionally, financial aid or scholarships may credited to your account before all study abroad charges are posted, causing you to get a larger direct deposit than you should have received. Please do NOT spend that money until you know that you have paid your study abroad bills in full.
IMPORTANT: As discussed earlier, you will likely need to pay for various costs before your financial aid and/or scholarships are credited to your Student Account. Such costs may include:
- Program deposits and instructional fees
- Accommodation deposits and fees
- Airline tickets
- Passport application fees
- Visa application fees and cost of obtaining supporting documents
- Immunizations and vaccinations
- Airport pick-up reservation fees
If you applied for financial aid, you may check the status of your financial aid application and your financial aid awards by logging onto your UI-Integrate Self-Service account. NOTE: Summer financial aid requires a separate application and is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
If you are expecting financial aid but it has not been credited to your Student Account, you may be able to determine the reason by checking your UI-Integrate Self-Service account, calling OSFA at (217) 333-0100, or visiting the Office of Student Financial Aid, located in the Student Services Arcade, 620 E. John Street.
