IEFX student profile: Brittany Daley
Brittany Daley, a freshman in nuclear, plasma and radiological engineering from Algonquin, Ill., started her first semester of college just weeks after her last semester of high school. Through Illinois Engineering First-Year Experience (IEFX), Daley began her Illinois career alongside about 30 other students in June.“We got to know each other really well and we got to know the campus while it wasn’t really busy,” Daley said. “You actually will know people when fall starts, so you’re not really meeting everyone new. It was just the best experience.”
IEFX allowed Daley to get a jump on her education, taking nine credit hours in the summer (earning a 4.0 GPA), including an IEFX projects course. For the course, she was part of a team of five students that aided a local nonprofit, Restoration Urban Ministries, in the development and design of micro homes -- small, affordable housing options for the homeless or first-time, low-income homeowners. Daley said Restoration Urban Ministries is likely to begin construction on the micro homes in Champaign this spring.
“They want the families to be imbedded back in society because right now where they’re living is basically like a motel with about six people in each room,” Daley said.
In addition to the IEFX project, Daley has broadened her campus involvement by joining American Nuclear Society and Society of Women Engineers, where she's a member of the SWE fundraising committee. Through SWE, Daley got a taste of college life in high school during an overnight mentorship program and she hopes to give back to the incoming freshman in the same way.
Beyond academics, Daley is also a member of the rock-climbing and ski and snowboarding club; the latter had her traveling to Montana for four days of skiing and snowboarding over winter break.
“There are so many opportunities and programs available,” Daley said of her freshman experience. “Everything has been really great so far.”
