Michael McCarty, a 2013 Lemelson-Illinois finalist, has demonstrated his ability to spread his wings over a wide range of projects in a number of engineering disciplines.

For starters, McCarty, a senior computational bioengineering major, is the co-founder of Prawg, Inc., a startup company aiming to revolutionize the way viewers interact with their TVs.

Structural engineering and mechanics courses will now be offered online as part of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) online master’s degree program, and students will now be able to pursue the MSCE degree in the area of Structures.

University of Illinois researchers have developed a new way to produce highly uniform nanocrystals used for both fundamental and applied nanotechnology projects.

Three faculty members from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering—Farzad Kamalabadi, Jonathan J. Makela, and Gary Swenson—are part of a multi-institutional team that will design, build, and operate NASA’s next heliophysics satellite mission, the Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON).

This year, the 2013 National Concrete Canoe Competition (NCCC) will make its return to the place it first began: the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. More than 20 teams of college students who have designed and built concrete canoes will gather at Illinois June 20-22 to showcase the finished results of their nine-month projects. The three-day event, most of which is open to the public, will culminate in concrete canoe races on Homer Lake in nearby Homer, Ill.

A native of Orland Park, Kan., Jackie Yu had her choice of schools (she applied to 14) when making her college decision and ultimately chose Illinois over Duke, Cornell, Vanderbilt and Northwestern after feeling at home during an overnight visit and receiving one of the prestigious Engineering Visionary Scholarships.

Physics professor Steven Errede has been selected to receive the Arnold T. Nordsiek Physics Award for Teaching Excellence for the 2012–2013 academic year, for “creating innovative, engaging instructional laboratories in acoustics and the physics of musical instruments for beginning and advanced undergraduate students.”

Engineering at Illinois alumna Ping Fu (MS 1990, Computer Science) will return to campus this spring as College of Engineering Commencement speaker. The Commencement Ceremony will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 12 in the State Farm Center (Assembly Hall).
