The University of Illinois’ Department of Computer Science will develop new technologies designed to support information networks in uniquely challenging environments as part of a $16.75 million research center funded by the U.S. Army Research Laboratory. The Information Network Academic Research Center (INARC) will address the research challenges inherent in complex, mobile, self-forming, and rapidly-changing networks such as those utilized on the battlefield by the Army and its soldiers.

On October 27, more than 60 research-oriented senior company representatives and College of Engineering unit leaders joined together to discuss research and technology directions and opportunities as part of the annual Innovation Leadership Advisory Board (ILAB) meeting on campus.

A proposal submitted by a team of researchers from across the engineering campus is among 37 projects awarded during the first round of funding under the recently formed U.S. Department of Energy Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E).

The transistor. PLATO. The LED. No matter what pops to mind first, Engineering at Illinois has a long tradition of groundbreaking scientific research and development. But  Michael Loui, a professor of electrical and computer engineering, along with then undergraduate students Brett Robbins and Erik Johnson and current undergraduate Niranjan Venkatesan, made a discovery sure to amaze the academic community: Studying helps students improve their grades.

For the fourth year in a row, a team of Illinois computer science students is heading to the ACM International Collegiate Programming Competition world finals. The team took first place in the regional contest on Sunday, October 24, when teams of students from across the state faced off in a no-holds-barred “battle of the brains.”

On Oct. 15, Engineers Without Borders at Illinois, was honored several years of hard work in developing nations. The cities of Champaign and Urbana selected EWB-UIUC as a recipient of the 2009 Champaign-Urbana International Humanitarian Awards.

In recent months, the media have been buzzing with talk about the "Smart Grid," especially since then-President-Elect Barack Obama featured the need for new Smart Grid technology in a January 2009 speech on the economy. Now, the Information Trust Institute (ITI) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and its partner institutions, have been recruited to contribute towards the ongoing development of a resilient, secure Smart Grid in the United States, following the announcement of a major award of research support from the U.S. Department of Energy with contributions from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
